U.S. 91 pavement work, funded by new revenue, underway in Pocatello through late fall

POCATELLO - A project is underway in southeast Idaho’s Pocatello/Chubbuck area to repair a short stretch of U.S. 91 (Yellowstone Avenue) and replace failing concrete panels. The project will provide a smoother driving surface for motorists, improve walkway options for pedestrians, and will serve business and economic-development interests in the corridor.

The project includes pavement rehabilitation, utility upgrades, and sidewalk repairs.  A new 10-foot diameter storm water infiltration system will be installed near the railroad overpass along Quinn just East of Hurley Drive. Crews will also reseal cracked and broken joints in the pavement.

Work began June 6, and is expected to finish late this fall.

The Idaho Transportation Board advanced a group of projects in 2015 using funds allocated by the Idaho Legislature in the state’s first transportation-revenue increase in nearly two decades. Doing so enabled the advancement of dozens of other critically needed road and bridge projects statewide in the future. This is one of that initial group of projects.

The half-mile project will be done in phases to reduce impacts to businesses along the route. Keeping U.S. 91 in good repair is important to the economic vitality of the region, including the shipment of large industrial equipment manufactured by local businesses.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Traffic patterns will change daily, so drivers must pay attention to construction signing and signals.  Access to local businesses will be maintained.

Braun-Jensen Inc., of Payette, Idaho, is the prime contractor for this $1.3 million work.

The primary partners/stakeholders are the cities of Pocatello and Chubbuck, Bannock County, and the Bannock Transportation Planning Organization.
