Replacement of Georgetown Creek Bridge, funded by general-fund surplus, begins Monday (Aug. 1)
POCATELLO - Replacement of the box culvert spanning Georgetown Creek on U.S. 30 in Georgetown is slated to begin Monday (Aug. 1). The work is expected to finish late this fall.
This $789,000 project is funded by surplus in the general fund.
The bridge, at milepost 423 in Bear Lake County, is structurally in fair condition. The current capacity of the bridge does not allow heavy trucks to use it, however, making the bridge functionally obsolete. The short-span bridge, built in 1932, was being inspected every 48 months.
U.S. 30 cuts southeast through downtown Pocatello to Interstate 15, where it heads south to McCammon and then proceeds through Soda Springs into Bear Lake County. The route is preferred by commercial truckers and recreationists, with more than 3,340 motorists using this highway daily, 800 of which are commercial trucks.
The primary partners/stakeholders are Bear Lake County, the city of Georgetown, the city of Soda Springs, the city of Montpelier and the trucking industry.
Crews will work six days per week, and the road will be reduced to one lane controlled by a temporary signal. The posted speed limit will be 35 mph.
Cannon Builders, of Blackfoot, Idaho, is the contractor on this project.
The Idaho Transportation Board selected road and bridge projects across Idaho in December 2015 for maintenance and repair work. The projects are all funded by the $54.1 million in general fund surplus provided by the Idaho Legislature last year. Selections came from a pool of projects based on analysis of each project’s return on investment in the areas of safety, mobility, economic opportunity, bridge condition and right-of-way purchases. This is one of those projects.
