Transportation board meets Aug. 17-18 in Eastern Idaho for district tour and business meeting

RIGBY – The Idaho Transportation Board will tour the Thornton Interchange construction site and several businesses in Eastern Idaho, along with recognizing Teton County for its commitment “Toward Zero Deaths” on Idaho’s roads during its monthly meeting Aug. 17-18 in Rigby.

On the tour, the board will get a first-hand look at construction of the Thornton Interchange. The new interchange will allow ITD to eliminate the last of the deadly intersections and all other at-grade (level) intersections with U.S. 20 between Idaho Falls and Sugar City.

The Thornton Interchange will make the 30-mile stretch of U.S. 20 between Idaho Falls and Sugar City a full–access-control, divided highway, which will improve safety, mobility and economic opportunity for drivers. The project received overwhelming support from the community during the public involvement process.

During the regular meeting on Thursday, Aug. 18, the board will recognize the Teton County Sheriff’s Office for having zero fatalities on their roadways in 2015. Also, the Idaho State Police will be recognized for efforts to keep the roads safer in Eastern Idaho. This is the fourth time in five years Teton County has had zero fatalities.

“For three years in a row Teton County has shown that zero fatalities is possible,” said office of Highway Safety Manager John Tomlinson. “That is the vision for all of Idaho. Making smart choices and driving safely will help drive down deaths, and increase the number of counties with zero fatalities.”

Teton County joins Bear Lake, Blaine, Boundary, Oneida, Valley and Washington County as the seven counties in Idaho with zero fatalities in 2015.
