Work begins Sept. 19 on improvements to U.S. 12 between Lewiston and Orofino

LEWISTON – Improvements to a 20-mile stretch of U.S. 12 from the Arrow Bridge to the Big Canyon Creek Bridge will begin Sept. 19, continue through mid-November, shut down for the winter and resume next spring. The project will benefit the public by extending pavement life and upgrading the signs and guardrail to current safety standards.

Work includes milling and replacing pavement between milepost 15 and milepost 35, along with upgrading 1,300 square feet of signs and about 64,000 feet of guardrail. Crews will remove 292,000 square yards of old pavement, and apply 44,000 tons of new pavement.

The project will be done in two phases. Work will initially begin this fall, and the remaining milling, repaving and replacement of signs will be done next spring and early summer.

Drivers can expect delays of up to 30 minutes during construction. Flaggers and pilot cars will be used to direct traffic from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. There could be two work zones within the 20-mile project. ITD appreciates the patience of motorists during this period.

Knife River Corporation, of Boise, is the contractor on this $5.35 million project.
