Speed limit on Idaho 33 in Teton to be reduced for school hours starting Monday (Jan. 9)
RIGBY - The posted speed limit on Idaho 33 in Teton City will be reduced for school hours beginning Monday (Jan. 9). Crews will install 25-mph speed limit signs in the school zone, effective when beacons are flashing during times children travel to and from school in the morning and afternoon.
The reduced speed limit will not be in effect at nights, on weekends or during school breaks.
The speed restriction will be enforced for about three-tenths of a mile on Idaho 33 (Main Street) between 3rd West and Center Street in Teton, where many students of Teton Elementary School cross the highway. Approximately 2,700 vehicles travel this stretch of road daily.
The restriction was prompted by highway-engineering and safety studies requested by officials of the Fremont School District and the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office. The studies found average speeds were almost 35 mph through the school zone.
The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office asked that the transportation department make the stretch of Idaho 33 (Main Street) near the elementary school a regulatory (enforceable) rather than an advisory (unenforceable) school-zone speed limit.
The transportation department uses engineering and safety studies to determine what motorists consider reasonable, convenient and safe for existing conditions. Speed limits are intended to supplement driver judgment and are set at a level that studies indicate will be observed voluntarily.
Motorists should take extra care while highway crews change signs along the route. Idaho State Police and local law enforcement officers will patrol the road during and after the speed-limit transition.
