Traffic safety improvements targeted in grants available through Feb. 17
BOISE - Promoting behaviors that lead to better traffic safety is the goal of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) federal grants available through Feb. 17 via the Idaho Transportation Department’s Office of Highway Safety. State or local governments and nonprofit groups are eligible to apply.

Traffic crashes were the leading cause of unintentional injury deaths for Idahoans aged 1 to 34 years from 2011-2015. A traffic crash occurred every 22 minutes, a person was killed every 40 hours, and another was injured every 40 minutes in 2015. The estimated economic cost for Idaho motor-vehicle crashes in 2015 was more than $3.8 billion.

The application can be downloaded from the ITD website at Highway Safety Grant Application. To receive the forms electronically, please email ohsgrants@itd.idaho.gov or call (208) 334-8100. The programs will begin on Oct. 1, 2018.

"We encourage our partners to apply for funding to implement innovative highway safety projects to save lives and move Idaho toward our goal of Toward Zero Deaths," said John Tomlinson, ITD's Highway Safety Manager.

NHTSA funding supports priority highway safety program areas including safety restraint use, distracted driving, impaired driving, aggressive driving, youthful drivers, roadway safety/traffic records, and other problem areas.
