Three highways in eastern Idaho to reopen late this afternoon, check 511 for updates
RIGBY - Crews hope to reopen U.S. 26, Idaho 22 and Idaho 28 in eastern Idaho late this afternoon (Tuesday, Jan. 24). Blowing and drifting snow closed the highways last night.

For current highway and weather conditions throughout the state, and updates on highway reopenings, access the Idaho 511 Traveler Information site at 511.idaho.gov or call 511 from phones within Idaho. Reports are updated as conditions change.

• U.S. 26 is closed between its junction with U.S. 20 near the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and Moreland (mileposts 272-301). The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) estimates the road will reopen as soon as 5 p.m.

• Idaho 22 is closed between its junction with Idaho 33 east of Howe and Dubois (mileposts 24-68). ITD estimates the road will reopen as soon as 4:30 p.m. today, depending on weather conditions and maintenance operations.

• Idaho 28 is closed between Mud Lake and Leadore (mileposts 15 and 89). Estimates are for the road to reopen by 4 or 5 p.m., assuming winds remain subdued.

Drifts in some places across the highways are four feet deep, requiring road graders or other heavy equipment to clear them.

Motorists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel on storm-affected highways in Idaho. When travel is necessary, motorists should drive to meet conditions, regardless of the posted speed limit.
