Road work, paving project on Idaho 81 east of Declo begins Monday

DECLO – A full-width roadway paving project, which will remove the driving surface and recondition the underlying base for about nine miles of Idaho 81, is expected to begin on Monday (June 5). The work will improve roadway smoothness as well as increase life expectancy of the section of road between Yale Road and Declo.

The existing roadway surface has experienced cracking and potholes in recent years due to minor failure in the underlying base. The work includes processes to remove the surface, stabalize and compact the base, and repaving the roadway surface.

Drivers should watch for flaggers. A pilot vehicle will be used during work hours Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic will be driving on a gravel surface through much of the construction zone. The paving portion of the work is expected to be complete in late July and a seal coat will be applied in August.

The project limits begin at the Marsh Creek bridge on the east side of Declo and extends to near Yale Road. The work will also include widening the shoulder, replace several culverts and install new roadway delineators.

Western Construction Inc. of Boise is the contractor for the $3 million project.
