MEDIA ADVISORY: Idaho Transportation Department gives hands-on training, improves hiring for contractors

COEUR D’ALENE – With construction booming across Idaho, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is providing hands-on training for heavy equipment operators to help fill the skilled labor employment gap.

ITD offers a three-week training program that teaches operational skills in 10 pieces of heavy equipment*. On Thursday (June 29), members of the media and contractors looking to hire are invited to a special event hosted by ITD where graduates of the program will showcase their skills.

Much like an NFL Combine or Spring Training, contractors are invited to meet ITD’s trainees and watch first hand as they operate heavy construction equipment in a safe and controlled environment.  If the contractor likes what they see, they are welcome to hire new employees on the spot.

WHAT: Heavy Equipment Operator Showcase

WHEN: June 29, 1 p.m.

WHERE: Kootenai Technical Education Campus, 6838 W Lancaster Rd., Rathdrum, ID 83858

WHO: Meet graduates of the HEO Program and ITD trainers

This hands-on approach to hiring is part of a cultural shift for the Idaho Transportation Department.  Rather than sitting in front of an interview panel, applicants are placed in real-world work scenarios, and experience day-to-day job functions.  The department hopes that this practice will lead to a better understanding of job functions, resulting in greater job satisfaction.

* Trainees learn the operation of:  Grader, Skid steer, Backhoe, Loader, Excavator, Mini-excavator, Roller, Haul-Truck, Dozer, Forklift.  Participants also receive Flagger certification, OSHA-10, CPR-First Aid, and training in signaling and crane rigging.
