Public meeting will be held Aug. 15 on Yellowstone Avenue safety enhancements
POCATELLO – The Idaho Transportation Department is hosting an open house on Tuesday, Aug. 15, to share information about proposed safety enhancements to Yellowstone Avenue.
The public meeting will be at the Pocatello City Hall, 911 North 7th Avenue, from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. The meeting will be in an open-house format that allows individuals to view information and visit with project staff any time between those hours.
The purpose of the open house will be to present current design plans for a raised median along the center of Yellowstone between the Cedar and Alameda intersections and gather input from the public. The project also includes the adjustment of signal timing at the Alameda intersection. Transportation department staff will be available at the meeting to answer questions and discuss the proposed safety enhancements.
“ITD has worked with area businesses, motorists and other members of the public as we design and prepare for construction of the raised median and signal adjustments,” said Gene Staggs, ITD Project Manager. “ITD has spent extensive time and resources studying this portion of Yellowstone, and these enhancements will greatly improve safety in the area.” The project is estimated to be built by 2020.
In 2014, the transportation department began a study to address safety considerations at both the Yellowstone/Alameda intersection and the stretch of Yellowstone between Cedar and Alameda. Part of the study was an analysis of crash data that indicated a safety problem along this stretch of roadway. The transportation department used both the crash data and traffic data to model different improvements and intersection designs that could address the safety issue and provide for more capacity. The results of the study showed that the installation of a continuous raised median along Yellowstone between the Cedar and Alameda intersections would provide a substantial safety benefit for the corridor and the traveling public.
This project is currently in the design phase. Once public comments are received and reviewed, the team will finalize the design. The project is estimated to be built by 2020.
Those who are unable to attend the open house but would like to provide feedback can do so until Aug. 30, 2017. For more information, or to provide comment, please contact Andrea Gumm at agumm@langdongroupinc.com or at (208) 870-8751.
