Media Advisory: ITD and AAA to host back to school safety event

BOISE – In partnership with local law enforcement and the Safe Routes to School program, AAA and the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) will host a media event to emphasize safe driving in school zones.

The event will take place Thursday, August 31 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. in the rear parking lot of ITD's headquarters at 3311 W. State Street in Boise.

Some progress has been made in the overall protection of pedestrians on Idaho roadways, but school-age children are still very much at risk. According to 2015 crash data, the most recent data available, child pedestrians ages 4 to 14 were more involved in serious and deadly car crashes. The number grew by 31 percent, raising serious concerns that more must be done to protect children walking to school and playing in their neighborhoods.

ITD, AAA, Safe Routes to School and local law enforcement will all be represented at the event and will be available for interviews.

During the event, representatives will discuss pedestrian and motorist school zone safety tips in greater depth.
