Preliminary work on Interstate 84 between Karcher and Franklin will begin the week of Oct. 16

BOISE – The Idaho Transportation Department will begin preliminary activities the week of Oct. 16 on Interstate 84 between Karcher Interchange and Franklin Boulevard Interchange. Initial activities will include surveying and testing the existing road and structure foundations.

To complete work over the next few weeks I-84 may be restricted at night, including shoulder closures, and speed reductions between Karcher and Franklin Blvd. Crews will also work during the day at the Karcher Overpass.

ITD is preparing to widen I-84 between Karcher and Franklin Blvd. and make substantial improvements to the Northside Interchange, Karcher Overpass and the Union Pacific Railroad/canal bridge structures in Nampa.

Improvements are expected to improve safety, capacity and traffic flow for many years.

The Idaho Legislature approved the continued use of GARVEE bonding in the 2017 session to fund improvements. GARVEE bonds allow ITD to accelerate highway improvements and complete projects sooner than through traditional funding mechanisms.

Currently, this corridor serves more than 80,000 commuters each day and this project will affect a wide range of motorists, businesses and others in the local community.

“The revenue generated from GARVEE bonds has allowed Idaho to make significant investments in our state’s transportation infrastructure,” said ITD GARVEE Program Manager Amy Schroeder. “Rebuilding this interstate in Canyon County will add capacity and functionality to the highway system for many years into the future.”
