Teen Driver Safety Week kicks off in Idaho with tonight's Middleton-Skyview high school football game

BOISE - The Office of Highway Safety is teaming up with the Middleton Mayor's Youth Advisory Council to host a kickoff event for National Teen Driver Safety Week (October 15-21). The groups will engage with teens and their parents before tonight's Middleton vs. Skyview (Nampa) high school football game.

“Parents have a very strong influence on their teens, even as they grow older and become more independent,” said John Tomlinson, Idaho Highway Safety Manager.

Motor-vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States - ahead of all other types of injury, disease or violence. In 2015, 1,972 teen drivers (15 to 18 years old) were involved in fatal traffic crashes. These crashes resulted in 2,207 deaths nationwide, of which 1,730 were teens.

An estimated 99,000 teenage drivers of passenger vehicles were injured in motor-vehicle traffic crashes.

Parents can help protect their teen drivers by talking with them about risky behaviors. Surveys show that teens whose parents set firm rules for driving typically engage in less risky driving habits and are involved in fewer crashes.

“We can do more to protect these young drivers. We need parents to set the rules before their teens hit the road,” Tomlinson said. “This is a great opportunity to start conversations with our kids about safer driving — but this is a conversation we'd like to see continue every day throughout the year."
