Work underway on U.S. 93 widening safety project
JEROME – Crews have been doing preliminary work to realign about one mile of U.S. 93 north of Interstate 84 for several months, and work to relocate irrigation ditches and construct the new road base will begin to impact drivers this week. The project will improve safety at the 400 South Road intersection, which is considered a high-accident location, in addition to meet future needs for roadway capacity.
The project is extending a widened portion of U.S. 93 through the 400 South Road intersection and will include two lanes in each direction for through traffic, right- and left-turn bays, a depressed center median, and simplified access into adjoining businesses.
Along U.S. 93, a reduced speed limit to 35 mph and a 14-foot width restriction will be in effect. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained throughout the project, but there will be traffic delays and flagging during parts of construction. Drivers are reminded to use caution throughout the entire construction zone, watch for construction traffic and crews, and use diligence to watch other drivers that may be stopping while turning off the highway.
Drivers can expect closures to 400 South Road in each direction beginning this week and continuing for 6-8 weeks, with relocation of two irrigation ditches and associated piping takes place. West of U.S. 93, work also will include lowering the elevation of the road as it approaches the intersection which will improve visual impacts for drivers.
Idaho Materials and Construction, of Twin Falls, is the contractor for the $7.3 million project. The contractor will continue work as weather allows through the remainder of fall and during the winter months, but work is expected to extend into the summer of 2018.
