Transportation Board approves additional $86M for I-84 expansion, $6M for ID-16 preliminary work

BOISE - The Idaho Transportation Board allocated an additional $86 million to widen the Interstate 84 corridor from Nampa to Caldwell, funding the projected $330 million of improvements planned for the area.

On Thursday, the board unanimously approved allocating $86 million in GARVEE (Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle) bonds to widen and improve I-84 from Franklin Blvd. in Nampa into the city of Caldwell. This is on top of $150 million in GARVEE bonds allocated in April and additional state and federal funds dedicated in October.

"This decision shows the commitment of the board to address a high-priority need in the state," said board chairman Jerry Whitehead. "Improving the Interstate will enhance safety on our roads and benefit the regional economy by moving goods and people more efficiently."

This decision allocated all of the $300 million in GARVEE bonds the Idaho Legislature approved during the 2017 session. The board previously approved $64 million for improvements in northern Idaho.

Additionally, the board approved spending $6 million from state funds for preliminary engineering services on the Idaho Highway 16 corridor. Connecting ID-16 with I-84 is listed as a priority in the long-term regional plan. This engineering prepares the department to move forward with those plans.
