Idaho high school "Battle of the Belts" winners announced

BOISE -- Efforts by Idaho teens to keep their schoolmates safe are gaining recognition across the state and the country as the Idaho Office of Highway Safety announces the winners of the 2018 "Battle of the Belts" competition.

The competition is part of an effort to get students and high schools to actively engage and educate their local communities about the importance of wearing seat belts. Between 2012 and 2016, 62 percent of teens killed in crashes were not wearing seatbelts.

In addition to state recognition, the team from Wallace Jr./Sr. High School was also recognized nationally as a winner of the National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS) Seatbelts Save Challenge.

The Wallace team was honored as the observed seatbelt use rate at their school increased from 20 percent to 78 percent during their campaign. In addition to a cash prize, the team received an invitation to visit the NOYS Interactive Traffic Safety Lab in Washington, D.C. this fall.

Prizes for winners were provided by State Farm Insurance and included grants for the winning schools and scholarships for individual winners.

"Keeping all drivers safe on our roadways is a proud part of the State Farm heritage and what we strive for in our communities. Through a 2018 Good Neighbor Citizenship® grant, State Farm is honored to support the Battle of The Belts with a Scholarship to Peyton Worley," says Ken Wells, State Farm Agent.

The winning schools were:
#1 Ridgevue High School, award $1,500
#2 Wallace Jr./Sr. High School, award $1,000
