ITD partners with teens for safety

BOISE—Tomorrow morning (Friday, June 22), teens from across Idaho will partner with highway safety professionals to reduce crashes among young drivers.

As part of the annual Association of Idaho Cities conference in Boise this week, 32 teens from across the state will write and produce a series of public service announcements to promote safe driving among their peers.

“If we are going to achieve our vision of zero fatalities on our roads, young drivers need to be part of the solution,” said Ken Corder from the Office of Highway Safety.

Teens make up less than six percent of all licensed drivers in Idaho, but in 2016 more than one out of every five crashes involved a teen driver.

“Nobody knows how to talk to teens better, than teens,” Corder said. “The youth who come to the AIC conference are the influencers in their schools and communities and they bring an energy with them that’s contagious.”

The teens will begin Friday morning by brainstorming ideas focusing on seatbelts, drunk driving, aggressive driving and engaged driving. After finalizing their concepts, the teens will head to JUMP at 11 a.m., where they will work with a local creative agency to film and produce their PSAs.

“A big part of the AIC experience for these teens is service,” Corder said. “We are excited they are chose to commit their service to keeping their friends and communities safer and we are thankful to have partners willing to contribute their time and efforts to make this a reality.”
