BOISE - The Idaho Transportation Department will host evening open houses on June 26, 27 and 28 to gather community input about improvements to Interstate 84 in Canyon County. "ITD is working quickly to deliver two separate projects on I-84 in Canyon County,” said Amy Schroeder, GARVEE Program Manager for ITD. "First, we are on track to begin widening I-84 from Karcher to Franklin in Nampa later this year. The second project is an environmental study and traffic analysis of I-84 between the city of Caldwell and the Karcher Interchange in Nampa. Community input plays a major role in both projects.”

Design plans for the $150 million I-84 Karcher to Franklin project include:

  • Widening I-84 to three lanes in both directions.
  • Adding auxiliary lanes between interchanges to improve travel between adjacent exits.
  • Replacing the Northside Interchange with a Single Point Urban Interchange.
  • Rebuilding the Karcher Road Overpass, railroad/irrigation canal bridges and Mason Creek structure.
  • Modifying ramps and signals at the Franklin Boulevard Interchange to improve traffic flow.

The $193 million I-84 Caldwell to Karcher includes an analysis of current and future traffic volumes, a detailed environmental study and a recommended course of action through the year 2045. ITD anticipates the study will take 18 months to complete and may result in plans to add lanes on I-84 and improve or replace existing interchanges. Participants at the June open houses will be asked to help ITD identify issues and needs to be addressed in the study.

Materials from the open houses will be posted at www.itd.idaho.gov/84corridor after the events. Questions about both I-84 projects can be directed to ITD at (208) 334-8002 or 84corridor@itd.idaho.gov.
