Idaho 21 will reopen Thursday afternoon
BOISE - Idaho 21 between the Grandjean junction and Banner summit will reopen Thursday (March 8) at about 2 p.m., the Idaho Transportation Department announced.
There may be additional closures of the highway as the area's temperatures warm up. With warmer weather, the snow on steep slopes above Idaho 21 becomes unstable, creating conditions that contribute to avalanches. Motorists who are considering driving the highway are advised to check on its status by visiting 511.idaho.gov or calling 5-1-1.
Idaho 21 is a regional route between Stanley and the Treasure Valley. The 9-mile section of the highway between the Banner summit and the Grandjean junction, called Canyon Creek, has numerous documented avalanche chutes. Idaho 21 between the Banner summit and the Grandjean junction experiences about 90 percent of the avalanches in the state.
