Warmer temperatures allow easing of northern Idaho load and weight restrictions on the state highway system
COEUR D'ALENE - Load and weight restrictions have been lifted for most state highways in northern Idaho, the Idaho Transportation Department announced. Warmer temperatures over the past two weeks have helped end the freeze/thaw cycle that put a severe strain on area roads.
Sections of 10 northern Idaho highways were originally restricted. Restrictions are based upon the type of road construction, the amount of moisture, temperature conditions, and severity of the breakup. Idaho law allows the transportation department to reduce the speed and weight of trucks to minimize highway damage.
The following restrictions remain in place:
- Idaho 57 (milepost 0.00 - 37.23) - weight and speed of 35 mph
- U.S. 2 (milepost 25 - 28.33) - legal weight but reduced speed of 35 mph
- Idaho 5 (milepost 6 - 8) - legal weight but reduced speed of 35 mph
Motorists are asked to be patient where trucks are required to drive the reduced speed. Signs are posted along the restricted highways. Truckers are also notified of the restrictions through the transportation department's traveler services web site, 511.idaho.gov.
