ITD issues advisory on central mountain highways

BOISE - Increased travel during the holiday weekend is sparking interest in highway conditions in the Central Mountains. Below is a breakdown of current conditions and forecasts. Keep in mind that weather and conditions can change rapidly in the mountains. The traveling public should check 511 before leaving for the latest conditions at 511.idaho.gov.

U.S. 95

Currently open from the Treasure Valley to New Meadows. The forecast is for more favorable weather over the weekend.

Idaho Highway 55

Currently open from the Treasure Valley to New Meadows. Potholes have formed in some locations and there are icy spots. Drive with extreme caution. The forecast is for more favorable weather over the weekend.

Idaho Highway 21

  • Idaho City to Lowman: Currently closed. Crews are working to clear heavy snow from the roadway. Additional snow in the forecast suggests the closure may remain in effect into the weekend. Parking on the highway is prohibited. Access to "park and ski" areas is unlikely through the weekend, as lots have not been cleared.
  • Canyon Creek: This is the section of ID-21 between Lowman (Granjean) and Stanley. The road is currently closed due to avalanches. Crews are working to mitigate the avalanche hazard and, once complete, will need to clear earlier slides. The closure is likely to remain in effect into the weekend or beyond.

Idaho Highway 75

Currently open from the Wood River Valley to Stanley. Road conditions are difficult and there is a risk of avalanches falling on the roadway. Drive with extreme caution. Forecasted snow and wind may create unsafe conditions and require the road to be closed.
