Pavement preservation project on ID-19 in Canyon County begins Monday

CALDWELL - The Idaho Transportation Department will begin chip sealing, a method of preserving pavement, on Idaho Highway 19 in Caldwell beginning Monday, July 15 at 8 a.m.

Work will be completed from east to west, beginning just east of Blaine St in Caldwell and ending at the junction of U.S. 95, south of Wilder. ITD anticipates this work will take approximately two weeks to complete.

Crews will work in two mile sections at a time. In the work zones, travel lanes and speed limits will be reduced. Two-lane sections of highway will require traffic to stop and flaggers will allow one lane of travel at a time.

Chip sealing, also called sealcoating, protects the surface of the road and extends the lifespan of the pavement. A sticky slurry is sprayed on the road, rock chips are applied on top of the slurry, and traffic compresses the chips into place for a long-lasting seal.

Reduced speeds are required on fresh chip seals to prevent loose rocks from flying up. Pavement lines will be covered by the sealcoat. Temporary markers will guide traffic while the chips set and fresh paint will be applied to the roadway within a few weeks.
