Construction on Idaho 33 west of Rexburg to start Monday

RIGBY - Construction on Idaho 33 west of Rexburg will begin Monday (April 16), the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

Crews will begin repaving about five miles of highway from 12th West in Rexburg to the Henrys Fork Bridge (milepost 73 to 78). Signs will be set up for traffic control before construction starts.

During construction, motorists can expect 15- to 30-minute delays. Travel will be reduced to one lane, with flaggers directing eastbound and westbound traffic through the work zone. The speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph in the work zone.

Access to businesses and residences along the five-mile stretch of Idaho 33 will be maintained.

Work will take place between 7 a.m. and dark seven days a week. The project is scheduled to be finished in late May.

ITD awarded H-K Contractors, Inc. of Idaho Falls the $1.7 million contract on Nov. 14, 2006.

The contractor will use a type of construction known as cement recycled asphalt base stabilization, which consists of pulverizing the road surface and then adding cement to the old asphalt. The mixture is then compacted on the roadbed and used as the base for a layer of new asphalt. The process also includes a seal coating of asphalt and crushed rock.

ITD will administer the project using federal funds. When completed, the five-mile stretch of Idaho 33 will offer a strengthened road base and new surface.

Motorists are asked to drive carefully through the work zone.
