Construction on U.S. 20 southbound lanes to start Tuesday (May 22)
RIGBY - Construction on the southbound lanes of U.S. 20 north of St. Anthony will begin Tuesday (May 22), the Idaho Transportation Department announced.
Crews will repave about four miles of the southbound lanes from Twin Groves to Chester (milepost 349 to 353).
Southbound traffic will be shifted to a northbound lane of U.S. 20. The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 45 mph. At certain times during construction, flaggers will direct traffic.
Motorists will not be able to cross U.S. 20 at the intersection of 600 North and 2600 East in Fremont County.
Work will take place on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. The project is scheduled to be finished in mid-June. ITD awarded H-K Contractors, Inc. of Idaho Falls the $1.9 million contract.
The contractor will use a type of construction known as cement recycled asphalt base stabilization, which consists of pulverizing the road surface and then adding cement to the old asphalt. The mixture is then compacted on the roadbed and used as the base for a layer of new asphalt. The process also includes a seal coating of asphalt and crushed rock.
ITD will administer the project using federal funds. When completed, the four-mile stretch of southbound U.S. 20 will offer a strengthened road base and a new surface.
Motorists are asked to drive carefully through the work area.
