Weekend closure scheduled for Chinden/Cloverdale intersection, June 1-4
BOISE - The intersection of Chinden Boulevard and Cloverdale Road will close during the first weekend in June as part of the Chinden widening project, the Idaho Transportation Department announced. Chinden will remain open to two-way westbound and eastbound traffic, and access to the Hewlett-Packard (H-P) Cloverdale entrance/Explorer Drive intersection will remain open to northbound Cloverdale traffic.

The closure will allow crews to excavate and reconstruct the roadway. The intersection will close at 7 p.m., June 1 (Friday) and will reopen to traffic by 5 a.m. June 4 (Monday). No turns from Chinden onto Cloverdale, or from Cloverdale onto Chinden, will be allowed. An additional one-day intersection closure is expected at a later date for final paving.

Crews are also constructing new lanes on the south side of Chinden. In early July, traffic will begin using these new lanes, which will allow work to shift to the roadway's north side. Throughout the project, one lane of traffic is maintained in each direction during daytime hours. Periodic nighttime lane closures can be expected between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Flaggers will guide motorists through the work zone. Access to businesses and residences will be maintained.

Motorists can access Hewlett-Packard (H-P) from either the Five Mile or Cloverdale entrances. Night and weekend traffic is required to use the Cloverdale entrance on the west side of the H-P campus.

Joplin Road is closed from the Chinden/Cloverdale intersection to Ancell Lane. Motorists can access Joplin at its eastern intersection with Chinden (near Mountain View Drive). Following completion of drainage work and pipe installation, the City of Boise will install underground sewer lines in the same area. After sewer work is complete, the Ada County Highway District plans to resurface Joplin Road.

Chinden widening project background

The project will add bicycle lanes to both sides of the roadway. Curb, gutter and sidewalk will be installed along the south side of the road. By the project's completion, pedestrian and bicycle facilities will extend from Eagle Road to the Joplin Road/Mountain View Drive intersection.

In addition, a new half-mile-long frontage road will provide access to homes on the north side of Chinden between Joplin and H-P. As a result, the Chinden/Joplin intersection will be reconfigured.

To expedite the project, crews are working an aggressive schedule, including some night and weekend hours. Central Paving, Inc. of Boise is the contractor on this $5.5 million project. Work is expected to be complete in late 2007.

This is the third and final phase of a project to widen Chinden from Eagle Road through Garden City. The Chinden widening project was divided into three phases for several reasons; public convenience, cost, environmental effects and right-of-way acquisition. Phase one, between Eagle Road and Cloverdale Road, was completed in November 2003. Phase two, between H-P's main entrance and Joplin Road/Mountain View Drive, was completed in December 2006.

Chinden Boulevard receives more than 26,000 vehicle trips per day. That number is expected to increase to 30,000 - 36,000 per day by 2030.
