REMINDER: ITD hosts media event TODAY (Oct. 20) to kick off National Move Over Awareness Week
REMINDER: MEDIA EVENT - TODAY
COEUR d'ALENE - National Move Over Awareness Week aims to raise awareness to the need for motorists to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles on the side of the roadways. With slick winter driving conditions rapidly approaching, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is hosting a media event TODAY (Oct. 20) to encourage safe driving around highway vehicles, including snow plows.
Event Information:
When: Today, Oct. 20, 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Where: Lancaster Market at US-95 and Lancaster Road
ITD will have a highway maintenance operator, an Idaho State Police (ISP) motorcycle trooper and an employee from Schaffer's Towing available to talk to reporters
about the best way to stay safe when encountering highway response vehicles and
snow plows.
ISP will also stage a scenario near the meeting location so that drivers
can practice moving over, and reporters can see firsthand how many do so.
“Vehicles pass by ITD workers, ISP troopers and tow truck drivers every day on state highways or the interstate at 60-80 mph or more. The sudden gush of air from the passing motorist or the rocking of the ITD vehicle as a semi passes by is a sober reminder that death or serious injury may only be feet away,” ITD Emergency Planner Neal Murphy said.
Each year, the transportation department organizes a winter safety campaign that offers a variety of information and tips on being prepared for winter conditions. The campaign,“Idaho Ready,” will be launched later this fall. Additional information can be found at: https://itd.idaho.gov/road-mtce/.
