Interstate 84 overpass damaged at Mountain Home
BOISE - The Exit 90 overpass at Mountain Home was damaged early Thursday morning when a semi struck the overpass after leaving the Interstate 84 eastbound right lane, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.
The accident occurred at about 4 a.m. on Thursday, killing the driver of the Freightliner semi. The semi left the travel lane on the right side of Interstate 84, drove on the gravel shoulder for about 150 feet, then struck the sloping embankment that supports the overpass. The semi also hit steel girders underneath the overpass.
The westbound Exit 90 off-ramp was closed Thursday morning. The driver struck the east side, but due to the interchange's layout, it was necessary to close the westbound off-ramp. The right lane of the Interstate 84 eastbound section also was closed. One lane of the overpass itself also was closed.
Idaho Transportation Department bridge inspectors were examining the overpass early Thursday morning for safety. They plan to open the eastbound right lane of Interstate 84 and the overpass by 10 a.m. Thursday.
