I-84 widening reaches milestone; new lanes to open near Karcher Interchange on Monday, Nov. 7

**UPDATE** Due to inclement weather, ITD has rescheduled the work to Monday evening, Nov. 7. The Karcher Interchange westbound off-ramp and westbound on-ramp will close at 9 p.m. and re-open at 6 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8.

NAMPA – The Idaho Transportation Department’s Interstate 84 widening project between Caldwell and Nampa will reach the first in a series of major milestones next week. Weather permitting, crews will begin opening new lanes near the Karcher Interchange on Monday, Nov. 7.

Motorists should plan ahead for overnight ramp closures at the Karcher Interchange during final striping. The westbound off-ramp and westbound on-ramp will close at 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, and re-open at 6 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7. Traffic will be detoured to the Northside Interchange. See detour map linked here.

On Monday:

  • A third east- and westbound travel lane will open between Middleton Road and the Karcher Interchange. The new capacity will help reduce traffic bottlenecks at the Karcher Interchange.
  • A new westbound auxiliary lane will open between the Northside and Karcher interchanges. An auxiliary lane allows traffic to travel between interchanges without merging into through traffic.
  • A second lane will open on the Karcher Interchange “loop” off-ramp.

The process of opening new lanes between the Franklin Road and Karcher interchanges (exits 29 to 33) will continue over the next few months. All work is weather dependent.

Crews will return in the spring of 2023 to seal several bridges in the project area as temperatures warm.

Work on I-84 is expected to improve safety, mobility and economic opportunities in Idaho over the next 20 years. More information is available at itdprojects.org/84corridor
