Hayden student sends letter of appreciation to ITD

One second-grade class at Atlas Elementary School in Hayden took it upon themselves to send letters of appreciation to their favorite businesses in the community.

The Idaho Transportation Department can often be overlooked, as its services are used every day and aren’t quite as glamorous as other agencies (talking about you, Captain Twitter and Idaho State Police!).

However, one student named Sawyer is the son of ITD mechanic Doug Combs in District 1 and wanted to recognize the department:

"I believe ITD is the best place in our community," he wrote. "One reason I feel this way is because you work hard. You also look at what is wrong with the truck and you fix it so you can get it back on the road."

The letter was a surprise to Doug, but district engineer Damon Allen wrote Sawyer back:

“I agree that we have the hardest working, dedicated employees around…Did you know that every day, more than three and a half million vehicle-miles are travelled on our state highways just in District 1? That would not be possible, especially in winter, without skilled snowplow operators and mechanics that keep all of our equipment running around the clock.”
