D4’s Stanley crew uses collapsible barricades to enhance safety

The maintenance crew from Stanley in District 4 is now using a collapsible barrier, with modifications to the typical barrier to improve the ease of transport and the safety of our workers.

Specifically, eliminating tripping hazards, preventing bolts and plates from breaking and bending when the barriers are in transport, making them easier to store and easier to transport.

“The idea of having removable legs was because the barriers are very awkward to transport, and because they are big and awkward, moving them can present a tripping hazard for employees,” said Dakota Morgan with the Stanley maintenance shed. “The worst part about using them was getting them from point A to point B, especially if you had two or more.”

So, Morgan and the crew came up with the idea of replacing the nut on the bottom bolt of the assembly with a Kotter Pin (pictured above), so no wrenches are needed to remove it.

“You just have to pull the Kotter Pin, then slide the bolt out and pull the leg off,” explained Morgan. “We also attached a piece of telspar to slide the leg we had taken off and attach it back to the barricade in a stored/transport position.”

“We made the legs of the barricades removable, without compromising the integrity of the barricades,” he said. “We have a place to store the legs on the barricade easily.”

Morgan has even thought of cold-weather storage: “We will also be making brackets to hang them on a wall and keep the legs off the ground during winter to prevent them from freezing to the ground.”
