Forest Service thanks D3 crews for fire assist

Wildland firefighters are thanking maintenance crews in District 3 for their help responding to fires in the Boise National Forest along Idaho Highway 21.

The incident commander for the Canyon Fire sent a thank you letter to the Lowman maintenance crew. In his note, he thanks ITD crews for managing traffic control and helping keep everyone safe.

Wildfires are pretty common in the Central Mountains, but it can be a challenge when it is required to restrict a road or even close it. ITD's partnership with the Forest Service is critical to maintaining the highway year-round.

Crews were pulled from the Lowman, Idaho City, Banks, Cascade, and Orchard sheds to help respond to the fire over a couple weeks.

Idaho 21 is a popular route for those traveling between Boise and Sun Valley and the Canyon Fire required several restrictions and a closure. Maintenance crews made use of flaggers and digital message boards to warn motorists of the impacts and take detours.

The lighting-caused Canyon Fire burned 386 acres from July 14 to July 31.
