Idaho Celebrates Child Passenger Safety Week
Sept. 15-21

Gov. Brad Little has declared next week, Sept. 15-21, to be Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week in Idaho. There will be safety events around the state to mark the occasion, including Moscow (Sept. 18), Meridian (Sept. 19), Boise and Pocatello (Sept. 21), and Malad (Sept. 27).

“Children represent the future of Idaho,” Gov. Little wrote in his proclamation. “We are committed to educating parents and caregivers about the best ways to keep kids safe while traveling in cars, no matter how short or long the trip.”

Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and serious injuries for children 14 years old and younger. Of the 794 children 14 and younger who were killed in traffic crashes nationwide in 2017, 267 of them were not using a car seat, booster seat or a seat belt.

When installed and used correctly, child safety seats decrease the risk of fatal injury by 71% among infants, 54% among toddlers and 45% among children ages 4 – 8.

“Many of these deaths and injuries could have been prevented had these children been buckled up in an appropriate car seat or using a seat belt,” Gov. Little’s proclamation reported.

Idaho has more than 350 certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians who can assist in installing an appropriate car seat or booster seat.
