Four D1 employees prove
their engineering expertise

Several additional employees in Coeur d’Alene are on track to get the “P.E.” abbreviation added to their titles, as last week brought news that they all passed the final exam in their career paths.

Now Breanna Logerwell can apply to the Idaho Board of Licensure of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors to get her license, with Shannon Stein and Megan Koski eligible to do the same in February and May, respectively. They join ranks with Kyle Schrader, who became a licensed engineer earlier this year.

Passing the Professional Engineer exam (PE) means these employees are on track to become licensed engineers, capable of stamping their own plan sheets and working without the supervision of another licensed engineer. At ITD, it also means a gain in the horizontal career path.

To become a licensed engineer, applicants must graduate accredited institutions with a four-year degree, pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, pass the PE exam and work under a licensed engineer for four years.

A recent change in the process now allows applicants to take the PE exam before accruing experience underneath another engineer. That’s why, for possibly the first time ever, three employees in D1 all successfully took the test at the same time.

“They impress me every day,”D1 District Engineer Damon Allen said. “The department is steeped with engineering history, and these folks will continue that legacy and help us be the best DOT.”
