Random drug testing potential doubles in 2020

The percentage of drivers selected for random drug testing under the Commercial Drivers License (CDL) program increased from 25% to 50% of driver positions as of Jan. 1, 2020. This will affect all CDL holders, including hundreds of employees within the ITD Division of Highways.

On Dec. 27, 2019, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration announced in the Federal Register that the minimum annual percentage rate for random drug testing will increase. This change, which becomes effective January 1, 2020, is pursuant to requirements found in 49 CFR 382.305.

ITD Safety Officer Randall Danner (7-8038) or HR’s Dianne Magstadt (7-8792) can answer any questions about the new requirement.

The minimum annual percentage rate for random alcohol testing will remain at 10%.
