Innovation Steward Profiles:
Eric Dahlinger and Vicky Calderon,
Division of Highways

The two newest Innovation Stewards in the Division of Highways are Eric Dahlinger of the Central Labs, and Vicky Calderon of the Roadway Data section.

Dahlinger, a chemist who can be reached at 7-8245, became a steward in October 2019, just as ITD was making a second appearance in the Innovative Company of the Year finals from the Idaho Technology Council. He had already been participating in the innovation effort, but was asked by then-steward Jake Legler to take on more of a leadership role for innovation.

“I found that I not only enjoyed innovating, but also enjoyed helping others submit their innovations,” Dahlinger explained “So when Jake asked me to take his place as steward for the division, I was very excited for the opportunity!”

Dahlinger hasn’t had a lot of experience as a steward, but one of the first was also a memorable one.

“Although I am a very new steward and haven’t had much experience with it yet, I had the chance to attend a meeting in a different district where we all got to see an innovation in action. This particular innovation was one of the sticker signs in District 4 that has been put up next to a ‘Welcome to Idaho’ sign. I was shocked at just how effective it was!”

His message to employees is simple:

“There is no reason to be hesitant. Stewards are here to help.”

Calderon, a Research Analyst at 7-8218, had a similar experience that propelled her into the role – a co-worker in the process of transitioning out of their role asked her to consider stepping in. She became a steward in early January, less than a year after joining the department.

“I was a bit nervous to join the team at first, being fairly new to the agency and not having had much exposure or in-depth knowledge of the innovation program,” she explained. “I think what really pushed me forward to take on the challenge was knowing someone saw potential in me to be a good fit for this dynamic and motivational team. That, in itself, was worth me giving this new role a try.”

As an added bonus, Calderon said she truly enjoys helping others and looks forward to being part of a collective effort that connects individuals with resources to make innovations a reality.

“I’m grateful for this opportunity, and am eager and excited to continue learning more about Innovate ITD!, its mission, and how we can help provide meaningful support to others,” she added.

Like Dahlinger, her message to employees about Innovate ITD is simple:

“Big or small, your innovation ideas matter. No matter what level they bubble up from, they are equally valuable. “

“Taking part in Innovate ITD can help spread the remarkable work being accomplished throughout the agency. As Innovation Stewards, we’re here to help individuals move their ideas forward and make them a reality. Our hope is to make the innovation process a little less daunting for those who are hesitant to participate. We have many rock-star employees throughout the state with rock-star ideas. We should be encouraging each other to think outside of the box and remembering that all ideas and innovations are valued, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem at the time. Some of the best ones start as just a simple idea and blossom.”

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to empower others to imagine and cultivate new ideas and help support a wide variety of innovations,” she added.

“Although I’m just beginning my Innovation Steward journey, I look forward to the positive and impactful relationships I can build with staff across the agency and throughout the state. My personal interactions with past and present Innovation Stewards, through casual conversations and at events such as the Leadership Summit, have allowed me to experience first-hand the dedication, confidence, and positivity that Stewards radiate. By taking on this new role, I hope to carry that same dedication and enthusiasm forward.”
