Bovill’s $4,000 phone call

Four thousand dollars in Bovill currency roughly translates into four calves.

At the junction of Idaho Highway 8 and Idaho Highway 3, Bovill drivers experience forests and meadows that make up open range country whenever they travel. Locals are familiar with the movements of cattle both in spring and in the fall, so when operator Larry Ailor saw a few calves standing in foot-deep snow with more on their backs while on routine patrol a few weeks ago, he knew they weren’t where they were supposed to be.

“I instantly knew these calves were missed during the roundup and were here on their own,” Ailor said.

Not seeing a brand, Ailor finished his route, and once he had cell service, contacted the brand inspector with Idaho State Police.

“We are in contact with her several times a year dealing with livestock on the road,” Ailor said.

He finished his shift without incident, but heard later that the brand inspector was able to connect with the local chapter of the Idaho Cattle Association, which safely rounded up the four calves.

That was confirmed by Keith Feldman when he called the office to thank Ailor for his assistance, which ultimately saved the owners more than $4,000.

“To me it’s satisfying to know when we keep our eye open and do a little extra that our system does work,” Ailor said. “All we need to do is start the ball rolling.”
