EOTP: Same program, new look

From the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, ITD’s Training and Development division shifted their training tactics. Their most recent undertaking? Heavy equipment training in a mindful and innovative manner that had not been done before.

In the past, the equipment operators training program took place over a series of days in each individual district. Due to current restrictions however, this method was not a viable option.

“We took the classroom setting online and delivered training statewide to all districts simultaneously,” said ITD Training & Development Program Supervisor Amanda Regnier. “Using online platforms, we hosted the training session live and in real-time. Individuals were able to ask questions and participate just like they would in person.”

This effort required substantial coordination between district trainers and district staff in order to ensure that the appropriate individuals were identified and made available to attend the necessary sessions.

“Each district worked with our team to accommodate the creative schedule and provide necessary equipment in order to meet the horizontal career path deadline of June 30,” Regnier stated.

Once online training sessions were complete, Training and Development’s State Equipment Trainer Mike Stowell went district to district to complete in-person practical exams on equipment.

“Because of the current situation with COVID-19, this year’s training required more thorough outreach with the districts,” explained Stowell. “Unlike past sessions, we were not able to gather in large groups. We worked with personnel throughout the state to schedule individuals for the practical portion of equipment training, which allowed us to ensure social distancing could be implemented.”

Regnier explained that, “Stowell’s dedication to this effort and the cooperation of individuals throughout the state was essential in successfully completing this year’s equipment operators training program.”
