Take a spin on the wheel of road sign trivia

Chances are if you’re reading this article, you have been asked in one way or another for content or ideas that can be utilized for social media. Over the past few years, the Office of Communication has worked to grow ITD’s social-media presence in leaps and bounds through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. These efforts would largely fall flat, however, it wasn’t for the contribution of many department employees statewide.

Early in my tenure at ITD, I was asking D4 personnel what they would like to see represented on our social-media pages. I had a lot of good suggestions, and one that always stuck with me was that of road sign trivia.

The suggestion came from Scot Stacey, who was working as a Resident Engineer in D4 at the time. Stacey has since moved on to a position in D6, but his idea remained on the radar.

“I always thought it would be a fun way to educate the public of the purpose of these signs,” Stacey explained. “There are a lot of signs we use to inform motorists, but I’m not sure everyone knows exactly what each sign means.”

Many individuals agree that summer is synonymous with construction. With the turn of the season and many programmed projects in full stride, now seemed like a perfect time for the Office of Communication to make the idea a reality.

PIO Aubrie Spence, Videographer Dave Tuttle and Graphic Designer Jared Tuttle worked to create short video clips that will be posted on Facebook and to Instagram Stories several times throughout the coming months. D4 Shoshone East Foreman Carl Horn was also vital in helping ensure the proper definitions were depicted for signs shown.

“It will be interesting to see how the public engages with this effort,” said Spence. “Hopefully this simple idea will help teach drivers to pay attention to signage, which in turn creates a safer roadway for all.”
