WASHTO conference breaks from
in-person format,
important ideas still shared

The annual Western Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (WASHTO) Conference could not be held in-person as planned in Salt Lake City, Utah, earlier this month. However, representatives from the 18 western states still came together virtually to share ideas and best≠practices on challenges common to state departments of transportation regionally.

“Although we could not hold the usual conference because of covid-19 concerns, we were still able to hear about the programs and initiatives from other states,” explained ITD Director Ness.

The WASHTO Board of Directors was able to conduct the business meeting virtually, approve financial statements, set future WASHTO meeting dates, and review the association audit.

Among the highlights, Ness said, were individual segments on the Hewes Award, the Fallen Worker Memorial, the “Passing of the Gavel” to the incoming WASHTO president, and the Emerging Leaders program.

We wll focus on each of these four items in the coming weeks in the Transporter, with video pieces from each item. You do not want to miss cameo appearances by ITD’s Justin Wuest (D1) and Shannon Murgotio (HQ Bridge) in the Emerging Leaders video.
