American Falls maintenance crew
brings forethought and planning to projects

The maintenance crews in each ITD district tackle a lot of the same types of jobs throughout the year, whether that’s paving, guardrail repair, delineation, mowing, or a host of other activities. Establishing a project template to follow not only provides a blueprint today that any crewmember can check on to determine their own area of responsibility, but doing so also shaves valuable time from the process on subsequent jobs because all of the tools and project details have already been captured.

This idea maintains accountability for each crew member to be part of the project process. It creates an opportunity to define the project by date, location, equipment required, and allows us to plan and complete the job safely. By using this as a guideline, "each person knows their function and each aspect of the job to be done,” said crew member Shane Brown. Crew member Dave Roberts added that it helps by listing all the items needed for each individual piece of the work, and holds the crew accountable to ensure that all essential items are on hand.

“Plus it keeps us from having to go back to the shed because we’ve forgotten something, and that’s one of the biggest time savings,” explained crew member Anthony Rodriguez.

Following the job analysis is expected to save about 20 hours of back-and-forth driving and lost time per shed.

Brown added that they’d be happy to share their detailed job analysis document with other interested districts and crews.
