Automatic mailing of bulk 30-day temporary registrations streamlines process for dealers

When one of the hundreds of new and used auto dealers sell a vehicle, that company issues a 30-day temporary registration to the customer. But how that temporary registration made it to the dealer from the transportation department used to be a time-consuming and inefficient method.

Large dealerships request up to 60 “books” of temporary registrations at a time. To meet this order, DMV Dealer Operations Unit employees would need to retrieve the books, issue them in the DMV system and prepare for mailing. But only six registration books fit in the available envelopes. So, an order of 60 books would be packaged in 10 envelopes. Then the packages were sent to the mailroom for shipment.

Now, after a large order is received, the Dealer Operations Unit employee makes a request to the mailroom, which boxes and ships it. The mailroom employee sends the shipping control number to the Dealer Operations Unit, which in turn enters the appropriate information into the DMV system.

“This innovation is a huge improvement in customer service because the processing time is streamlined and registrations are getting to the customer sooner,” former DMV Dealer Operations Unit employee Niki Benyakhlef said. Benyakhlef is still with ITD, but in a different role, now with Executive Management.

“Also, there is only one box arriving with temporary registrations in numerical order instead of multiple packages with all the books in nonsequential order.”
