Powell operators develop “backup buddy”
to help guide new drivers

Today, most new cars have rear-view cameras that take the difficulty out of going backwards, but the same can’t be said for ITD equipment.

Many operators who come to work for ITD don’t already have their CDL and may not be used to driving large loads, creating a problem.

To help with the learning curve, a pair of operators from Powell developed the “backup buddy,” a magnetized wand that can be easily attached to the back of equipment, including any tools that extend beyond. It is especially handy for operators who work in remote areas and may not always be able to find someone to help when backing into tight spots.

Check out the video.

In District 2, there are typically three backing incidents each year (both by department operators and by others backing into ITD equipment). They are one of the top safety issues, and with this innovation from Levi Wilks and Jonathan Rice, some of the most preventable.
