Idaho ShakeOut Oct. 15 is reminder to prepare

On October 15, ITD will participate in the Great ShakeOut, which is an earthquake drill to reinforce preparedness, at work and home. For those who think they need not prepare, you only need to look back to the spring’s 6.5-magnitude quake to realize it is better safe than sorry.

The goals of the exercise, planned for 10:15 a.m., are straightforward:

- Assess your work and family plan for an earthquake
- Determine what you have in your area that could fall and hit you
- Discuss what you would do in the event of an earthquake - notification, communication, damage assessment, First Aid, etc.
- Drop, Cover & Hold On

“Making ITD a more resilient and prepared organization is why we practice for high threat - low occurrence events,” ITD Emergency Planner Neal Murphy said. “The Great ShakeOut helps us to discuss and focus on what we would do in the event of an earthquake. The real benefit is when you discuss with fellow employees what you would do at work or home, then make a plan.

During the week, we will send out some informational material to start employees thinking. An AlertSense message to ITD employees will precede the event on October 15.
