ACE Academy
Learning reaches new heights at three-day event
Students from throughout Idaho gathered this week at ITD’s Division of Aeronautics for the annual Aviation Career Exploration (ACE) Academy that began Monday (June 24) and concluded. Wednesday. Twenty-four adventurous Idaho high school students in grades 9 through 12 seized the opportunity to learn about all-things-aviation.

Fourth of July holiday celebrations mean barbecues, camping, boating and maybe some alcohol, so ITD reminds motorists to make the right choice by not driving after drinking. ITD's Office of Highway Safety works to reduce deaths and injuries from traffic crashes associated with dangerous driving behaviors.

Fire danger
Heat wave, fireworks prompt caution for July 4th holiday
It’s not the equivalent of a perfect storm or a triple threat, but elements are coinciding to make the next week a major concern for Idaho firefighters. Forecasts for extremely high temperatures, dry vegetation, a four-day Fourth of July holiday and exploding fireworks increase the risk for catastrophic wildland fires.

National Weather Service North American summers are hot; most summers see heat waves in one or more parts of the United States. East of the Rockies, summers tend to combine both high temperatures and high humidity, although some of the worst heat waves have been catastrophically dry.

Encore (6-21-13): Annual SuperCub flyin attracts pilots
Backcountry aviators from throughout the country made their way to the mountains of Central Idaho June 14-16 for the eighth annual Johnson Creek SuperCub summer fly-in. The event, coordinated by Dave Kirsten, was created in 2006 as a rendezvous for recreational aviators.

Encore (6-21-13): D-3 increases outreach to small towns
To provide support for smaller towns in southwest Idaho that need planning and traffic assistance, ITD has increased its outreach efforts. Those services not only will ease the workload on staffs in the small communities, they will save money by eliminating the need for consultants.

Encore (6-21-13): District 5's Dial claims roadeo title
The ITD truck & equipment roadeo, held Tuesday in Garden Valley, produced the first state title for District 5’s Bruce Dial. District 3’s Brad Steiner followed in second place while Trent Maupin of District 6 took third. Continue

Encore (6-21-13): Governor thanks ITD staff for dedication ceremony
Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter declared the one-hour ceremony to dedicate ITD’s Headquarters the “Philip E. Batt Building” a resounding success.The governor’s staff and ITD employees worked closely to stage the June 13 event to honor Gov. Batt’s many contributions.

Encore (6-21-13): Students learn from fun exhibits, hands-on projects
Flashing lights and fog made the Headquarters auditorium look more like a rave party than the ITD boardroom. But that was just good fun for the nearly 100 middle-school students from Canyon County and the Pocatello area. The students participated in an engineering field trip to ITD Wednesday (June 12).
