Transportation Board
Transportation board will hold its April 16 meeting in Lewiston
The transportation board will travel to Lewiston Wednesday for its monthly meeting. In a departure from past practices, the board will not take a day to tour the district. A tour of District 2 will be combined with a tour of District 1 in July. The group will still meet in the District 2 office to conduct its business meeting.

HIghway Safety
Campaign, awareness month remind motorists to pay attention to driving
Distracted driving is dangerous driving and a growing problem on the nation’s highways. To keep drivers safe, states across the country are joining with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's first coordinated national distracted-driving enforcement campaign: U Drive. U Text. U Pay. It runs April 10-15. The full month of April is designated as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Highways
Meridian interchange replacement groundbreaking Tuesday
The long-awaited replacement of the Meridian interchange kicks off Tuesday (April 15) with a groundbreaking ceremony at 1:30 p.m. in the Home Depot parking lot in Meridian next to Winco. The project includes widening I-84 to four lanes in both directions under the interchange and rebuilding the freeway between Meridian Road and Five Mile. ITD will add a third travel lane in both directions on Meridian Road, as well as dual left-turn lanes for each I-84 ramp.

D-6's Ruiz earns distinguished service award
Rayce Ruiz, D-6 land surveyor, received the 2014 Distinguished Service Award from the Idaho Society of Professional Land Surveyors this spring. ISPLS honored Ruiz at its 2014 conference in Pocatello in March. Ruiz is a 27-year employee of District 6, where he performs boundary surveys of public right of way and private property for project development.

511 Traveler Services
ITD's new 511 app has successful first week
The first week on the market proved quite successful for the latest ITD innovation – a 511 travel information app for smartphones. The new app for iPhone and Android phone users rolled out April 1. By April 8, the 511 app had seen 2,399 new users since the initial release. Of that total, 1,124 use the Android operating system, and 1,275 use Apple iOS.

Work Zone Safety
Encore (4-4-14) ITD reminds motorists to drive safely in work zones
Safe driving means safer work zones. That's why the Idaho Transportation Department asks motorists to drive carefully through work zones – for their own safety and the safety of construction workers. Each year, the Federal Highway Administration, ITD and other state departments of transportation draw special attention to safe driving in or near work zones during Work Zone Awareness Week, scheduled nationwide April 7-11.

Encore (4-4-14) AASHTO announces new information tool designed to educate about trust fund crisis
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials recently unveiled a new informational tool designed to educate the public and elected officials about the potential impact of an insolvent Highway Trust Fund. The "Nation at a Crossroads" is a web-based infographic, mobile app and printed brochure that provides a national perspective on surface transportation investments.

Beginning the first quarter of 2014, PERSI will begin posting the PERSpectives newsletter on its website. Members will be notified by e-mail instead of receiving a paper copy at their home addresses. The change in delivery allows PERSI to get the newsletter to members in a timely manner (more than a month earlier than before), saves money and is an environmentally friendly option for members.

Encore (4-4-14) States support first distracted-driving enforcement campaign
Distracted driving is a significant problem on America's roadways. According to the latest federal data, more than 3,328 were killed people and approximately 421,000 people were injured in crashes involving distracted drivers nationwide in 2012. These numbers are likely under-reported because of the difficulty in determining the role distraction plays in crashes.
