Moisture in the air, rocks on the road
This time of year, with precipitation coming in the form of snow, rain or even fog with a high moisture content, the likelihood of rocks and debris releasing from hillsides is ever-present, as shown yesterday in District 1.

State Employees
Employee pay lags further behind; report calls for 3% raises for Idaho state workers
A year ago, Idaho state employee pay was lagging 19 percent behind market rates. Now that gap has risen to 19.8 percent. The new state survey of employee compensation reaches this conclusion: Funds permitting, lawmakers should fund merit-based raises averaging 3 percent for state employees next year.

Highway Safety
State fatality rates continue sharp decline despite significantly increased volumes
For the third time in the last four years, Idaho achieved a measure of roadway safety the state could not reach for the better part of 60 years. While there is still significant work to be done, this shows a trend in the right direction.

Road Funding
Change in service-fee policy will help ITD put more money toward Idaho’s roads
ITD will start charging service fees to process credit card payments for motor-vehicle and driver-services transactions. The state currently pays those fees for all transactions processed through ITD. County Driver’s License and Vehicle Licensing offices already pass service fees on to the customer.

Idaho flu season is in full swing; health officials urge measures to protect children, elderly
Influenza season has arrived in Idaho, and it has the potential to be severe, Idaho public health officials say. Because it can be particularly severe for children and those older than 65, public health officials are recommending that everyone who hasn't yet been vaccinated should visit a drop-in clinic, pharmacy, or call their healthcare provider.
