Most of my conversations with District 3 Safety Coordinator Eric Copeland involve him saying “we cannot get complacent about safety.” It’s a great point and I always tell him “absolutely.” But I’d be lying if I said I’m always thinking about completing regular safety checklists.

Close call with train reminds workers of rail safety protocol
Stop-Look-Listen. Those were the safety reminders we all learned as youngsters regarding railroad crossings and approaching trains. Sage advice. An incident at a railroad crossing in District 4 Jan. 11 was a stark reminder that those words are still the best rule of thumb to follow.

District 2 crews earn Excellence award in Maintenance & Operations category for spring slide cleanup
The clean-up effort this past spring by District 2 in the aftermath of significant slides won the Excellence in Transportation Award in December. The cleanup involved 1,800 personnel hours over a span of five days, and required every shed in the district to pitch in — especially the Orofino, Grangeville and Lewiston crews.

Vassar marks 10 years as District 2 advocate on Idaho Transportation Board
In December, Jan Vassar celebrated a decade on the Idaho Transportation Board as the District 2 representative and advocate. Vassar had recently retired as Lewiston City Manager when she was appointed in 2010, right about the same time an engineer from Michigan took the reins as ITD Director.
