Disaster Response
Shoofly around US-95 slide south of Riggins now open
For the second time in the last month, ITD has managed to open up the temporary road around the base of the massive rockslide on US-95 since the first of two events blocked the only north-south route in Idaho on July 3. Previously, the temporary road had opened to traffic on July 8, but significant movement on the slope above crews forced a longer closure. Recent Hewes award goes to Texas DOT employee; Idaho drought continues, but victory is on the horizon
Even during a strange and unique time such as this current Covid-19 crisis, some things continue to operate as usual – albeit in a virtual format. One such case is the Hewes Award, named for Dr. Laurence Isley Hewes, and given annually since 1951 to an up-and-comer in the Western Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials ranks that includes the 18 western states that make up the organization. Tom Baker was ITD's last Hewes winner, in 1998. With the current crop of talented professionals, a fifth Idaho winner may rise up this year.
