ITD unveils Employee Communication Council

Dear Idaho Transportation Department:

Most of you are familiar with ITD’s Leadership Summits from the last few years, and this is an account of how a certain leadership summit team from the fall of 2016 has transformed into a council of your peers, dedicated to be a voice for ALL and enhance communication across all levels, divisions, and districts.

The 2016 summit team ("Develop the Next Steps in the ITD Constructive Culture Plan") was formed to help the department prepare and strategize on how to continue becoming a constructive workplace committed to the development of its employees and the environment in which we all work. There may even be a few of you who recall being interviewed by members of that 2016 summit team as we worked to better understand some of the challenges ITD faces. Communication was the overwhelming theme of those interviews, so in many ways this has been a natural evolution.

An identified solution from that year’s summit team was to form a council of employees, made up of frontline colleagues representing all ITD districts and divisions, focused on improving communication and providing a direct voice to senior and executive leadership.

The Employee Communication Council (ECC) was formed behind the scenes during the last year. However, this is the ECC’s first, official communication to the department! (ECC Charter)

Pulling something like this together has truly involved an effort by a wide range of ITD employees. First, there is the support of our Senior Leadership Team. Specifically, Brenda Williams and Jason Minzghor have been important advocates and proponents of the ECC and will continue to stay involved.  Additionally, Brenda recently upped that support by recognizing the value the ECC has (even in its early stages) and the great potential it has for success. So, with that in mind and because of her passion for the employees here at ITD, she hired Robin O’Neill, ITD Employee Champion, who began her work on January 29. Robin will be fundamental to the ECC achieving its mission and vision.

The ECC is currently made up of 19 of your peers and colleagues.  The current members are:

Additionally, we’d like to THANK all those who were part of the 2016 summit team as well as a handful of others who assisted with the development of the group over the last year.  We greatly appreciate your contributions!  Further, we’d like to note that there are several opportunities for others to engage in this endeavor, so please reach out to an ECC member and we can work with you and your direct supervisor.  Those openings are for the following areas/districts:

- D3 Field Rep.
- HQ DMV (2)
- HQ FP&A
- HQ Financial Services
- D5 Office Rep.

We’d like to invite you all to visit the ECC SharePoint page where you can learn a bit more about who and what the ECC is.  We are hopeful to hear from employees across the entire state and are eager to start serving the members of the ITD family.  So, if you have questions about a policy, confusion over a memo, safety issues or any other potential concern, please reach out to the ECC member in your area or simply make your submission to the group via our SharePoint page.

We will also be looking forward to any feedback or suggestions you may have as this will be a learning experience for us all and an ever-changing process; as we work toward making the department’s communication stronger, richer and more easily accessible.

Sincerely,

ECC – One ITD for all!
