Personalized plate improvement
to eliminate 9,000 phone calls annually

A change in how recently expired personalized plates are renewed will save up to 9,000 calls annually from the counties to the DMV.

"We are upgrading programming to eliminate the need to call ITD when an expired personalized plate is still available to the original owner of the plate," Titles Unit Supervisor Santiago Palomero said.

Currently, when a personalized plate has been expired for more than 10 days, the registration system displays a message instructing the county agent to call ITD. If the plate is still available, ITD updates the record to make it available to renew.

With the new programming, if the plate is still available, it will remain in the current database and renewal will be automatically allowed. If a plate becomes unavailable because someone else has applied for the same plate, the system will make the original plate unavailable to renew.

The original expired plate will still be available to be viewed in the historical record, eliminating the flag that stops county partners from issuing a registration to a personalized plate that has been expired for more than 10 days.

This new automation will reduce calls as well as automate a manual process that slows transaction times.

Team members helping to implement the change included: Sharon Neumann, Jane Baumann, Traci McWilliams, Kristall Gutierrez, Brittni Chomic, Doug Kolar, Kristina Johnston, Jenell Edwards, Brad Hunt, and Erin Christy.
